Section 1 – Understanding print is just like understanding speech
In the 1960s, Glenn Doman published a book with the somewhat horrifying title Teach Your Baby to Read.
However, it was based on the simple premise that understanding print is just like understanding speech – which is why babies can do it.
Like all the best ideas, this one heralded a revolution. It will transform the ways we teach literacy to all children, whatever their age, whether at school or in the home, and whatever barriers might be in their way.
It hasn’t worked that transformation yet, because we haven’t really taken the idea on board, as a society – or started to explore its quite breathtaking implications. When we do…
So the purpose of this website is to put the comparison between print and speech in front of you, and ask you to think about it, and what it means.
